For a US seller on Etsy, the main fees on each sale are a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, and a payment processing fee of 3% + $0.25. On some orders you may also pay an Offsite Ads fee of 15% or 12%. Below, we break down each fee in plain English and show exactly what you keep on a physical item and a digital download.
This post is educational and is not financial or tax advice. Fees are current as of September 30, 2026, and Etsy can change them, so check Etsy’s help pages before you set prices.

The Etsy listing fee
Etsy charges $0.20 per listing, whether or not the item sells. A listing stays up for 4 months. After that it expires, or it renews for another $0.20.
Two things to know:
- Auto-renew is on by default for new listings. You can turn it off in your listing settings.
- Multi-quantity listings renew when one sells. If you list 10 candles in one listing, Etsy charges another $0.20 each time one sells and the listing renews.
The Etsy transaction fee
When something sells, Etsy takes 6.5% of the order total. That includes the item price, the shipping you charge, and gift wrap if you offer it. It is charged in your listing currency.
This is why “free shipping” does not mean shipping is fee-free. If you build shipping into your item price, the 6.5% still applies to the whole amount.
Etsy payment processing fees in the US
If you use Etsy Payments with a US bank account, the processing fee is 3% + $0.25 per order. According to Etsy, it is taken from the total sale price, including shipping and any sales tax, and it is charged in addition to the transaction fee. Rates are different in other countries.
A small note on sales tax: Etsy collects sales tax from buyers in many US states. You do not keep that tax, but the 3% processing fee still applies to it, so your real fee is a little higher on taxed orders. The examples below leave sales tax out to keep the math clear.
Etsy Offsite Ads fees
Etsy advertises some listings on sites like Google and social media. You only pay if a shopper clicks one of those ads and then buys from you. Here is how the fee works, per Etsy’s Offsite Ads page:
| Your shop’s sales | Offsite Ads fee | Can you opt out? |
|---|---|---|
| Always under $10,000 in any 365-day period | 15% of the order total | Yes |
| $10,000 or more in any 365-day period | 12% of the order total | No, it is required |
Either way, the fee is capped at $100 per order.
Not every order has this fee. It only applies to sales Etsy links back to one of its offsite ads. But it is big enough that you should know what it would do to your profit.
Other Etsy fees you might see
- Currency conversion (2.5%). If you list items in a currency different from your payment account’s currency, Etsy charges a 2.5% conversion fee. Most US sellers list in US dollars and avoid it.
- Regulatory Operating fee. Sellers based in certain countries pay an extra percentage on each order to cover Etsy’s local compliance costs. The rate varies by country, so check Etsy’s list if you sell from outside the US.
- Optional costs like Etsy Ads (the on-site ads you choose to run), shipping labels, and subscriptions. These depend on your choices, so they are not in the examples below.
Worked example 1: a $25 physical item with $5 shipping
A buyer orders a $25 item and pays $5 for shipping. The order total is $30.
| Fee | Math | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | flat | $0.20 |
| Transaction fee | $30 × 6.5% | $1.95 |
| Payment processing | ($30 × 3%) + $0.25 | $1.15 |
| Total Etsy fees | $3.30 |
You receive $30 − $3.30 = $26.70. If your shipping label costs $5, you have $21.70 left to cover materials, your time, and profit.
If the sale came from an Offsite Ad (15%): $30 × 15% = $4.50 more in fees. Total fees become $7.80, and you receive $22.20, or $17.20 after the label.
Worked example 2: a $12 digital download
Digital downloads have no shipping, so fees are based on the $12 price.
| Fee | Math | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | flat | $0.20 |
| Transaction fee | $12 × 6.5% | $0.78 |
| Payment processing | ($12 × 3%) + $0.25 | $0.61 |
| Total Etsy fees | $1.59 |
You keep $12 − $1.59 = $10.41, or about 87% of the sale.
If the sale came from an Offsite Ad (15%): $12 × 15% = $1.80 more. Total fees become $3.39, and you keep $8.61.
Notice how the fixed $0.45 (the $0.25 processing charge plus the $0.20 listing fee) hits cheaper items harder. On a $3 printable, that $0.45 alone is 15% of the price. This is one reason many digital sellers bundle small items together.
How to use this when you set prices
- Add your fees before you pick a price, not after. Our free Etsy Fee Calculator does the math for any price and shipping amount.
- Plan for the occasional Offsite Ads sale. Check that you still make money at 15% or 12%.
- Charge enough for shipping to cover the label, since fees apply to shipping too.
- Track your real numbers. Etsy’s fees show up across your payment account, so a simple sheet makes it easier to see your true profit. Our Etsy Seller Spreadsheet tracks sales, fees, and profit per listing in Google Sheets.
If you sell handmade items, our guide on how to price handmade products shows how to fold these fees into a full pricing formula.
